Ending Open Defecation in Nigeria through Market Based Sanitation

Increasing Access to Quality and Affordable Toilets

Open defecation seriously impedes Nigeria’s ability to achieve sanitation goals.

Lack of access to toilets in a major cause of open defecation and diseases in many communities across Nigeria like most parts of the world with over 120 million people, not using a toilet. Instead, they go out in the open in the open fields, railway tracks, garbage dumps, parks and roadside ditches. This is incredibly dangerous, as exposure to human waste causes diarrhea and other diseases that can be deadly, especially for children.

Empowering Children with Hygiene Education

Toiletpride works with partners, to improve the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices of school aged children across communities in Nigeria. To get children excited about these issues, Toiletpride employs the use of puppets and puppeteers to teach children about safe practices such as proper hand-washing, tooth brushing, eating clean and healthy food, and drinking clean water.

Accelerating Access to Rural Sanitation in Nigeria

Through our Accelerating Access to Rural Sanitation in Nigeria Project (AATRISAN) project, we are enhancing quality of lives through improved access to basic sanitation facilities and services. We work alongside communities, sanitation entrepreneurs and partners to help create an environment in which businesses are supported to provide quality, affordable toilets for households through marketing and promotion, direct sales and facilitating access to credit.

Combating NTDs with WASH

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) occur in some 150 countries and typically affect the poorest and most marginalized communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas that do not have adequate access to clean water and sanitation and live in close contact with vectors of disease. About 1·6 billion people worldwide, including more than 500 million children, are at risk of one or more NTDs and NTDs cost affected economies billions of dollars. For many people living with NTDs, stigma and discrimination remain unchallenged

As a result, we are Increasing access to sanitation and hygiene, and reinforcing improved hygiene and sanitation behaviors that reduce the risk of STH, Schistosomiasis and Trachoma infection in Nigeria through the Harmonizing Action on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (HANDWASH) Project
